City Sewer System

The City of Creston wants residents to be aware that wipes labeled as "flushable" are in fact, NOT flushable for the City’s sewer mains and lift stations.  These wipes do not break down in the system and have the potential to cause clogging of the sanitary sewer system and lift station pumps.  This can cause sewer backups into homes and businesses and cause the city to spend thousands of dollars on repair and maintenance of equipment.  Wipes tend to snag and catch in the system and ball up causing restrictions in the piping and pumps.  Some of these clogs have to be cleared manually and could pose a danger to personnel.

The following items should not be flushed:

1.  Wipes of any kind
2.  Feminine hygiene products
3.  Fats, oil, greases
4.  Bandages
5.  Cigarette butts and coffee grounds
6.  Diapers and dryer sheets
7.  Q-tips, cotton balls
8.  Tissue, paper towels, scrub pads
9.  Medication
10.  Paint, solvent, cleaners, poison, hazardous waste
11.  Plastics of any kind
12.  Syringes, needles, sharps
