SANITARY SEWER SMOKE TESTING

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS

As part of an ongoing effort to improve the sanitary sewer service, the City of Creston Water Pollution Control Dept., will be conducting smoke testing on the sanitary sewer lines to locate sources of rainwater inflow to the sewer.

During the testing, white smoke will exit from vent pipes on the rooftops and from breaks in the sewer lines.  The smoke used is not harmful to people or property.  It is almost odorless and leaves no residue.  The smoke cannot enter buildings unless there is a defect in the building’s plumbing or a dry trap in a seldom-used sink or drain.

If residents have seldom used drains, please pour a gallon of water in the drain to fill the trap.  This procedure will help to prevent smoke from entering the living area through the drains.

Any smoke detected within a building should be reported to the field workers during the testing at that time or by calling the Creston Public Works Dept. at (782-2000, ext. 1) or the Creston Fire Department at 782- 5610 or 911.

If anyone should have any questions, contact the City of Creston Public Works Dept. at 782-2000, ext. 1.
